Job Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides essential support to the patient care team by delivering direct patient care, maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment, and ensuring patient comfort and safety. The CNA works collaboratively with the healthcare team to optimize patient care and enhance clinic operations while maintaining a pleasant, courteous, and cooperative manner with patients, visitors, and Center personnel.
Essential Functions
- Participates in care team huddles and pre-visit planning.
- Greets, registers, and receives patients, visitors, and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times.
- Interviews patients to obtain and record required demographic and screening information as needed and trained.
- Supports the care team by collecting necessary patient information, including pharmacy, email address, and other providers seen.
- Takes and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height.
- Places patients in examination rooms with proper draping and privacy and prepares patients for exams, treatments, or procedures as directed.
- Collects specimens such as urine or stool and prepares them for lab analysis.
- Conducts patient screening questionnaires as trained and records information in the medical record.
- Assists nurses and/or providers with procedures and treatments.
- Documents phone messages, referrals, letters, and other patient care activities accurately and timely.
- Schedules patient appointments and assists with clinic flow as needed.
- Answers patient inquiries and provides information within the scope of the CNA role.
- Monitors and reports changes in patient conditions to nurses or providers.
- Provides emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Participates in care team quality improvement activities, including required clinical, operational, and financial measures.
- Maintains and organizes supplies and keeps exam rooms stocked and organized.
- Maintains current CPR certification and submits documentation to Credentialing and Human Resources.
- Participates in required nurse training sessions to obtain and maintain certification.
- Maintains the reception area in a neat and orderly condition.
- Answers telephones in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner and accurately records messages in the EHR system.
- May work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays depending on clinic hours.
- Maintains prompt arrival and regular attendance at work.
- Performs any other duties deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor and/or Nursing Manager.
Customer Satisfaction Requirements
Must provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and co-workers at all times in a professional and courteous manner.
Privacy and Compliance Requirements
- Adheres to HIPAA Privacy Rule policies and procedures.
- Completes Privacy Rule compliance training annually or as policy revisions are made.
- Protects patient medical privacy and maintains patient information in compliance with national standards.
- Maintains appropriate security of FPHC patient records.
Health and Safety Requirements
- Adheres to safety regulations, personnel policies, and procedures.
- Completes annual Safety and Hazard Communication training.
- Maintains knowledge of OSHA and CLIA requirements.
- Maintains yearly health records, including TB skin testing and completion of the hepatitis series.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Active CNA certification in Alabama preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Prior experience in a clinical or healthcare setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, telephone etiquette, and public relations skills. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks. Must have the ability to utilize an electronic health record and operate standard office equipment.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations: CPR required. Active CNA certification in Alabama preferred.
Other Qualifications: English as first language preferred. Bilingual and bicultural candidates will be considered.
Physical and Mental Demands
Requires eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, normal vision range, and the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. Requires frequent standing, sitting, bending, stooping, or stretching. Must be able to lift and move patients as needed.
