Optometrist
Job Summary:
Diagnoses, manages, and treats conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Examines eyes and visual systems, diagnoses problems or impairments, prescribes corrective lenses, and provides treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.
Essential Functions:
- Performs examination procedures to determine the health and welfare of the visual system and its component parts.
- Performs examinations to determine the status of the visual system as related to vision, visual function, and its correction.
- Provides treatment procedures that do not violate the prohibition of drug use for medical treatment unless under a co-management arrangement with another physician.
- Conducts tests to determine refractive errors such as farsightedness or nearsightedness and prescribes corrective lenses.
- Conducts tests to determine depth perception, color vision, and eye coordination.
- Tests for glaucoma and other eye diseases and diagnoses conditions related to systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, referring patients to an Ophthalmologist as needed.
- Prescribes corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses and recommends additional treatment options such as low-vision rehabilitation or vision therapy.
- Provides preoperative and postoperative care for cataract patients and patients undergoing corrective laser procedures.
- Promotes preventative care, including proper reading habits, nutrition, and hygiene.

Health and Safety Requirements:

Privacy Rule Compliance Requirements:
- Adheres to HIPAA Privacy Rule policies and procedures.
- Completes Privacy Rule compliance training annually or as updated.
- Protects patient medical privacy in accordance with FPHC policies.
- Maintains patient information in compliance with national standards.
- Ensures appropriate security of patient records.
Protected Health Information (PHI) Access:
This position is classified as a Primary Provider for HIPAA compliance purposes and is granted unrestricted access to PHI for patient care, and restricted access for other uses and disclosures in accordance with applicable privacy policies and procedures.
Performance Standards:
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Vision Services. An overall satisfactory rating is considered the minimum acceptable level of performance.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited school or college of optometry and a valid state license to practice optometry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Certification, Licenses, and Registrations:
- Valid, unrestricted license to practice optometry in the State of Alabama
- Current federal and state narcotics certifications
- Board eligible
- BLS certification preferred
Physical and Mental Demands:
- Must be able to respond promptly when on-call.
- Works within a healthcare environment with established safety and infection control protocols.
- Potential for lifting injury may be reduced through use of lift assistance teams.
- Ability to sustain extended periods of focused clinical activity as required.
